I Spent the Week Immersed in Calm (Here’s What I Noticed)
Headphones. Timelines. Waveforms. Re-listening to breaths and pauses — and accidentally learning something important about how our bodies handle life.
I’ve spent most of the past week immersed in guided meditation.
Not in the romantic, cross-legged, incense-burning sense.
In the practical sense.
Headphones on.
Video timelines open.
Audio waveforms stretched across the screen.
Listening. Re-listening. Editing breaths. Softening pauses. Tweaking tone.
What started as making guided meditations quietly turned into experiencing them.
Most of us don’t need fixing. We need settling.
Modern life has quietly trained our nervous systems to live in a constant state of low-grade threat. Not panic. Not crisis. Just… always on.
Always scanning. Always bracing. Always a little bit tense.
And for men living with disability, chronic pain, trauma, mental load, or just years of pushing through — this becomes the default setting.
You cannot think your way out of a dysregulated nervous system.
No amount of insight, self-awareness, or “knowing better” overrides physiology. When your system is in fight, flight, or freeze, your body is prioritising survival — not reflection, connection, or calm.
This is well established across trauma-informed therapy, pain science, and modern neurobiology. Regulation tends to happen bottom-up, not top-down.
Regulation inputs (that actually help)
Breath • rhythm • sound • imagery • gentle body awareness.
Not fluffy add-ons — real inputs to your system.
What I noticed while editing
The calm wasn’t dramatic. It was subtle: less bracing, more space between thoughts, a softening in the chest and shoulders.
And that’s the point.
Regulation isn’t about feeling amazing. It’s about feeling less hijacked.
That’s why we’ve launched Guided Chill-Pills inside Mendis — short, practical guided sessions designed to help your nervous system downshift when life, pain, fatigue, stress, or emotion feels like it’s running the show.
No spiritual bypassing. No pretending everything’s fine. No pressure to “relax properly”. Just tools that meet you where you are.
