When the Old Path Stops Working
Work gives a lot of men their identity — until one day, it doesn’t. That moment is confronting, but it’s also where the next chapter begins.
Maybe it’s an injury, a diagnosis, or a slow erosion of energy you can’t quite name. The world keeps moving at full speed, but your body, your mind, or your nervous system quietly says “not anymore.”
That gap between who you were and who you’re becoming can feel like free-fall. It’s uncomfortable — and it’s also where something new starts to form.
I know this personally. When my health changed, I went from running a school and juggling everything to struggling just to get through a day. I’d built my identity around being the person who could handle anything — a leader, a problem-solver, a doer. When that fell apart, I didn’t just lose a career. I lost a part of myself.
There’s a silence that follows — but in that space, purpose can be rewritten.
What We See at Mendis
At Mendis, I’ve met men standing in that same space. Men who’ve had to pivot — not always by choice, but because life forced them to. A bloke who worked construction for twenty years and now helps other men with back injuries find new paths. Another who spent decades in sales, now volunteering at a men’s shed — saying it’s the first time he’s felt useful without a business card. One who just shows up and listens — says little, but it matters.
These stories remind us: value isn’t about capacity — it’s about connection. It’s not how much you can produce; it’s how much you can still bring — presence, humour, experience, honesty.
Finding Purpose After the Pivot
- Recognise the pivot. The path changed. That’s okay.
- Do what you can, not what you “used to.” Mentor, share your story, help one person, make one thing.
- Show up somewhere safe. Spaces like Mendis matter because they give belonging — and remind you that you still have worth.
The world doesn’t always know what to do with men who can’t “work” in the traditional sense. But in our rooms, we see that worth doesn’t vanish when output does. Sometimes the greatest contribution you can make is simply showing up with honesty.
If you’re somewhere between who you were and who you’re becoming, come and join us. No suits, no speeches, no expectations. Just real talk, real people, and a reminder that you’re still enough.
